Christmas from the Heart
December 24th, 2022
For the past two years, team members and volunteers have spent their Friday evenings in the community room of Webster Garden Apartments, In Washington DC.
Through the course of serving the families of Webster Garden, Important friendships and bonds have formed. We felt that we wanted to make this Christmas special for our dear friends. Earlier this month we launched our Christmas From The Heart Fundraiser and let us tell you, we killed it.
Our initial goal was to provide gifts to 50 children within our Housing Hearts program. Due to the generosity and support of our supporters, we were able to surpass that goal and provided Christmas gifts to over 600 children! Together, over $5000 worth of football equipment was purchased and presented to the school on the day of induction. Launch of the PACT Program
November 13th, 2021
We are excited to share that Hearts of Empowerment launched its newest program, “The Pact Program” this past weekend! Our organization, alongside Jared Green, son of former Washington Football Team Hall of Famer, Darrell Green, proudly launched a new initiative to address the need of leadership and mentorship for disadvantaged youth in Southeast DC.
The “Pact Program,” invites children from Stanton Elementary School, Ida B. Wells Middle School, and Bard Early Education High School. The purpose of the program is to provide multi level mentorship where influential adults mentor high school kids, high school kids mentor middle school kids, and middle school kids mentor elementary school kids. All children reside and attend nearby schools.
This program kickstarted on Saturday, November 13th at the National Children's Museum in Washington D.C. The launch party was a Thanksgiving themed event, where children were introduced and community building activities partook across the museum. In an effort to stimulate conversation on what issues exist within their communities' and day to day livelihoods, a panelist discussion was held in the final hour of the launch party.
Panelists included Darell Green, Super Bowl Champion & former Washington Football Team player, DeAngelo Hall, former Washington Football Team player, Malcolm Battle, Athletic Director of Bard High School, and Kam Florence, VP of Tickets & Services for Monumental Sports. The four joined Hearts of Empowerment to engage, teach, and provide continued opportunities to the participating children.
We’d like to thank all supporters and look forward to the expansion of our program in the upcoming months!

Gym Equipment Drop Off
Bard High School Early College
August 21st, 2021
Bard High School Early College DC (Bard DC) recently opened in August 2019 as a partnership between Bard College and the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS). Bard DC seeks to demonstrate that an academically rigorous liberal arts and sciences program can intellectually engage a diverse group of high school students and effectively prepare them for success in college, careers, and civic life.
Hearts of Empowerment was made aware that Bard DC was having extreme difficulties financing their athletic program. They are currently under-resourced and have zero gym equipment. All gym activities are currently taking place in the school parking lot. After learning about these difficulties, Hearts of Empowerment used its resources and networks to find a solution to these issues. Our organization was able to make a significant donation by providing Bard DC different gym equipment and tools to kickstart their new gym facility. This donation is the beginning of Bard DC equipping their students with a new athletic program!

In an effort to increase engagement with the residents of Alexandria, we planned a Community Day that featured free food, music, and activities for kids and adults of all ages. This event was also a partnership with the City of Alexandria, and many agencies such as the Alexandria Police Department, Fire Department, Sheriff’s Department, Department of Community and Human Services, and others were present to continue building relationships in the community.
Held at the Charles Houston Recreation Center, we had a fantastic turnout of 200+ residents and completed 75 vaccinations. The great food and music spread around town pretty quickly, which prompted an appearance from Mayor Justin Wilson and Council Member John Chapman!
We would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your time and participation in this project!
Bicycle Donation
April 29th, 2021
On April 29th, Hearts of Empowerment received a generous donation of 20 bicycles from the team at DelRay Tower Apartments. We were able to use our network in order to relocate them and ultimately donated them to Gearin’ Up Bicycles’, a nonprofit organization in Washington D.C.
Gearin’ Up Bicycles’ purpose is to create career development opportunities and teach essential workplace skills to youth from under-served communities, while encouraging cycling as a practical, healthy means of transportation. Gearin’ Up provides access to quality, affordable, used bicycles for those in need and hosts various community outreach programs throughout the year.
At Hearts of Empowerment we believe that second chances are important, and many forget how a simple bicycle can jumpstart a new journey. We thank you for your continued support as we continue to change our community for the better!
Earth Day 2021
Everyday should be Earth Day!
April 24th, 2021
On Saturday, April 24th, our executive team along with 25 volunteers gathered at Justice Park in Falls Church, VA in order to assist with planting over 70 different plants and trees local to the area. This event took place alongside our partners, Invasive Management Area Program (IMA), a volunteer program overseen by the Fairfax County Park Authority.
In recognition of Earth Day, this project aimed to raise awareness to the rapid deterioration of our planet’s natural ecosystems and habitats. A growing topic of concern in the last decade has been focused on human interaction with our planet, and the impact that has had on it. Our organizations and volunteers used it’s time and energy to not only appreciate what nature has gifted us, but to preserve what we have left to cherish.
Hearts of Empowerment would like to thank all of our volunteers and sponsors, Wegmans Grocery and Toastique Gourmet Toast & Juice Bar, for their contribution and support for our 2021 Earth Day Project!

Black History Month:
Supporting Black Owned Restaurants
February 2021
In honor of Black History Month, Hearts of Empowerment gave a tour of different black owned restaurants that exist across Washington D.C. Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in our history. This year we featured the flavors, mission, and history of these amazing businesses and why they are so special to our very own community.
Restaurant #1: Roaming Rooster
In early 2015, Roaming Rooster was founded in Washington, D.C. by a family with a unique concept. The idea of a food truck with fried chicken that you could feel good about eating: free-range, grain-fed chicken served fresh every day. Roaming Roosters mission is to provide quality comfort food that our customers can feel good about eating. Their recipes are sure to spark an appetite in every lover of fried chicken!
Restaurant #2: Oohh’s & Aahh’s
As a black-owned business, Oohh’s & Aahh’s has been a staple in the community serving as a safe space since its founding in 2003. As it strives to preserve black culture, Oohh’s & Aahh’s uses their talents in the genre of soul food to bring food delight across the city. Oohh’s & Aahh’s has consistently received the “Cheap Eats Award“ and the “Best Macaroni and Cheese“ awarded by Washingtonian Magazine. Most recently, the restaurant was featured on the Food Network Cable show, “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives,” hosted by Chef Guy Fieri.
Thank you to everyone who came out to show support!
2020: Year In Review
The Final Climb:
Steps Toward A Cure!
Saturday, July 11th, 2020
We partnered with the man of the year Chris Gumiela, Chase Mckesey & the PUSO Foundation to help raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society! The Final Climb’s mission was simple. People donate and we climb steps.
$1 = 1 Step Closer to a Cure = 1 Step for the team to run non-stop!
Together we helped raise $6,600 in just 4 short days - which translated to 7,100 steps!
Our teams spent 4 hours running steps at the Nationals Park. That may seem like a long time and 7,100 steps may seem tough but, it's nowhere near as tough as the countless lives that are fighting this horrible disease. We're so grateful to have been a part of such an amazing day.
Thank you to everyone who helped us take steps toward a cure!
A Special Birthday Event:
Christian Benjamin, Covenant House, & Hearts of Empowerment
Saturday, February 29th, 2020
On Saturday, February 29th we celebrated our dear friend, Christian Benjamin’s 38th birthday. Christian has a successful career as an entrepreneur as the founder of StoryMKTG, co-owner of Eighty5Cigars, and curator at the Love Art Brand. Christian’s birthday wish this year was to raise money and bring presents for a non-profit organization he is passionate about - Covenant House D.C. Whose mission is to give abused and trafficked kids a way to get off the streets for good.
Together, we were able to gather wish lists from the youth that stay with Covenant House and launch an online fundraising campaign. Christian and Hearts of Empowerment raised enough money to purchase each child a gift from their wish list. Our team got to hang out with the kids at Covenant House, present them with gifts, as well as, care packages from Project Hygiene! It’s events like this that really touch our hearts.

Life’s A Gift
INOVA Children’s Hospital & Hearts of Empowerment Event
April 13th, 2019
We had the pleasure of partnering with the INOVA Children’s Hospital to present “Life’s A Gift”. The inspiration behind this event was to help improve morale for the young patients at the hospital. Hearts of Empowerment was provided a wishlist of items that would bring happiness, comfort, and security for the children during their stay. To assist with collecting as many gifts as possible, our team created an entertaining environment for people to drop off gifts and socialize. For those who were unable to attend but still wanted to contribute, we provided an option for online donations. We are proud to announce that we received over $1,000 in donations. These donations were used to purchase additional gifts including an iPad & a Nintendo Switch! Overall, we were able to collect more than 500 gifts!
We had a lot of fun at the event; and we were delighted to have made a difference in the lives of the children and staff at the hospital.
