Our Pathways to Opportunity Program
Academic Enrichment for the Youth!
Welcome to Hearts of Empowerment's Pathways to Opportunity Program, our year-long, in-house developed program designed to help DC high school students graduate with options and build a path toward long-term self-sufficiency.
Pathways is built around four pillars: Academic Empowerment, Career & College Readiness, Personal Growth & Leadership, and Social-Emotional Support. Through SAT preparation, college and scholarship support, career exploration, financial and life skills, mentorship, and individualized guidance, we meet students where they are and help them prepare for what comes next.
But Pathways is about more than academics. We create a space where students feel heard, supported, and exposed to opportunities they may not otherwise see. We want every student who leaves our program to have the confidence, relationships, skills, and options to build the future they want for themselves.
About This Program:
Our Pathways to Opportunity Program is designed to equip students 14-18 years old with the skills and knowledge needed to graduate with excellence and a variety of options for their future. We focus on comprehensive preparation, ensuring that our students are well-equipped for success in life after graduation.
To provide personalized attention and effective learning experiences, we offer multiple cohorts throughout the year. Each cohort engages students in exploring their post-graduation options while benefiting from mentorship, wellness check-ins, and enhanced career & college readiness.
Our commitment to expanding educational opportunities is ongoing. We aim to extend this program across various educational institutions and communities, empowering even more students to achieve their academic and personal goals.

2026
Tikwana Punnock – Dunbar High School
Tikwana’s journey has not always been easy. After moving from Jamaica to the United States, she faced the challenge of adapting to a completely new education system while navigating the transition to a new country and culture. Rather than simply adjusting, she excelled.
Today, Tikwana is an Econ Club DC Scholar and will attend George Washington University in the fall of 2026. Her determination, resilience, and commitment to her education have transformed obstacles into opportunities, making her a shining example of what can be achieved through hard work and perseverance.
